Upgraded Ruby 2.0 in the Ubuntu Bitnami Cloud Hosting base images

We recently released a new version of the our Ubuntu base image, rev 31. This version includes Ruby 2.0.0-p481, which will allow you to deploy the most recent version of Ruby applications like Redmine, Discourse and others.

The Ubuntu Bitnami Cloud Hosting servers are not only great for deploying Bitnami applications, but are also ideal for deploying your own applications. Discourse 1.0 now available in Bitnami!

As Discourse users ourselves, we're happy to announce that Discourse 1.0 is now available from Bitnami! With this release, Discourse has smoothed out all of the rough edges, and is now ready and safe for production use. We have been using it to run the Bitnami Community discussion site for close to a year now and have been incredibly happy with it, even pre-1.0 release, so we highly recommend that you check out v1.0.

If you are not familiar with Discourse, it is a next-generation community forum platform created by Jeff Atwood, of Stack Overflow and Coding Horror fame, and his team. You can learn more about the Discourse project by listening to (or reading the transcript of) our interview with Jeff Atwood.

Bitnami Discourse is the easiest way to run own Discourse instance. We've packaged up Discourse as a self-contained, pre-configured distribution that includes everything you need to run Discourse and makes it simple to deploy. To get started with Bitnami Discourse, download free, ready-to-run installers for Linux or Mac OS X or our virtual machine images (VMs). Or, if you want to have a hosted Discourse, you can deploy Bitnami Discourse into the cloud via the Amazon and Azure clouds.

If you're not ready to install it on your system, Bitnami also offers free 1 hour demos of all Bitnami apps, so you can check out the new release in an instant. Click the launch button below to give it a try.

Get started with new Discourse easily with Bitnami Discourse Stacks.

New Nginx stack with PHP and MySQL (LEMP)

We are happy to announce that the Bitnami Nginx Stack has been released. Also known as LEMP, WEMP and MEMP for Linux, Windows and OSX respectively, it provides a ready to run environment with the Nginx Web Server, PHP and MySQL.

The stack includes the following primary components:
  • Nginx Web server (1.6.1)
  • MySQL database server (5.5.38)
  • PHP-FPM (5.4.31)
  • phpMyAdmin web application management tool for the MySQL database (4.2.7.1)

In addition to these components, it includes:
  • Varnish proxy cache server (optional)
  • ImageMagick tool
  • SQLite database
  • XDebug module
  • Memcache module
  • APC module
  • GD library
  • OpenSSL library
  • CURL library
  • OpenLDAP library
  • PEAR and PECL package manager tools

Nginx is a small but very powerful and efficient web server and mail proxy. It is trusted but many of the busiest sites on internet, such as WordPress, Facebook and Dropbox. It is an asynchronous server and its main advantage is scalability. In a process-based server, each simultaneous connection requires a thread. This incurs significant overhead. An asynchronous server, on the other hand, is event-driven and handles requests in a single (or at least, very few) threads, consuming less RAM in busy environments.

The Bitnami Nginx Stack is also configured with PHP-FPM (FastCGI Process Manager), an alternative PHP FastCGI implementation with some additional features useful for sites of any size, especially busier sites.

The Bitnami Nginx Stack is available for free from the Bitnami app store as a native installer or virtual machine for local development, or as a cloud template for the Amazon and Windows Azure cloud computing platforms.

Waiting for OpenERP 8 (Odoo)? OpenERP 8 Dev already available in Bitnami!

OpenERP, one of the most important open-source enterprise resource planning (ERP) software suites, is getting closer to its next major release, OpenERP 8 which will be released with a new name, "Odoo". Although OpenERP 8 is still in development, we are happy to offer a ready-to-run package with their 8.0dev nightly build, so you can get an early look at this much-anticipated release. It can be deployed using all-in-one free native installers (for Linux), virtual machines and Cloud Images.

Some of the major changes in this new version are:

  • Website Builder & eCommerce
  • New CRM Kanban view
  • New Google Calendar synchronisation
  • New Warehouse Management
  • Gamification (Goals & Challenges for Users)
  • New enhancements in Accounting, Project Management & Human Resources
  • New Business Intelligence Reporting
  • And much more!

At Bitnami one of our goals is to simplify the testing of the latest versions of open source web applications. Bitnami OpenERP is completely self-contained and it will not conflict with your current development environment. You can download it, give it a try and safely remove it when you are done. Don't forget to visit our wiki to learn how to manage your installation.
We are also continuously looking for ways to improve our existing Bitnami stacks. We now configure our Python-based packages on Unix to use the Apache Event MPM and mod_wsgi in daemon mode, resulting in reduced memory usage and an increase in the number of simultaneous requests that can be handled by the server.
