How-To: Deploy Bitnami’s LAMP Appliance to VMware Environments Directly via VMware Marketplace!

If you are a developer, there is a high chance that you’ve utilized the LAMP stack in the past 24 hours. The LAMP stack, consisting of Linux, Apache, MySQL, and PHP/Perl/Python, is a web service tool used to quickly build websites and applications through a reliable coding framework. 

For developers who work with VMware environments, the easiest way to deploy the LAMP stack is through the Bitnami-packaged appliance that’s available on the VMware Marketplace – VMware’s one-stop-shop to discover, try and deploy open-source and third-party ecosystem solutions for all VMware products.  

Why use the Bitnami LAMP Appliance? 

LAMP is an extremely popular package of fully open-source services. So - what’s so special about the Bitnami-packaged version? And why use it via the VMware Marketplace, instead of just downloading and configuring it on your own? 

The Bitnami LAMP Appliance provides developers with standalone project directories where they can store their applications. Thus, they can start deploying their PHP applications without the need to set up the entire infrastructure.  This image bundles together the most up-to-date releases of PHP, Apache, and MySQL Linux, as well as phpMyAdmin, PHP modules, and Composer. Apache is configured with the 'event' Multi-Processing Module and PHP-FPM, which is an ideal configuration for high-traffic websites that serve a lot of simultaneous requests.  

Most importantly, the Bitnami LAMP solution is ready for production environments. That means that it includes SSL auto-configuration with Let’s Encrypt certificates and HTTPS/HTTP2 support, all of which allow developers to build more secure sites and applications as quickly as possible.  

The complete Bitnami catalog – including the LAMP appliance – is accessible from the VMware Marketplace, allowing users to easily deploy a wide range of highly secure, industry standardized, and open-source applications across all VMware environments. 

By deploying the Bitnami LAMP Appliance from the VMware Marketplace, developers only need to focus on building applications, without having to worry about governance, security, and so on.  It can be deployed to environments such as VMware Cloud on AWS, VMware Cloud Director, and VMware vSphere. To consume LAMP directly from VMware Marketplace, you would just need to browse the catalog, find the LAMP solution, and hit ‘Subscribe’. From there, just input the deployment configuration parameters. Within seconds, your application will be running in the infrastructure of your choice -whether it is in a public, private or hybrid environment.

Bitnami applications available in the OpenStack Community App Catalog

Today the Open Stack Foundation announced a new resource for sharing applications and developer tools during a keynote at the OpenStack Summit. The Community App Catalog — now available in beta — is open for contributions and will be curated by the community.

Five Bitnami stacks are featured the inaugural community catalog, including MEAN, Jenkins, Ruby Stack, LAMP Stack, Wordpress. This gives cloud users and developers point-and-click access to the applications, as well as a way to collaborate and access new technologies in the OpenStack ecosystem.

Bitnami is pleased to be a part of the effort to make installing cloud stacks and apps easier, alongside products from ActiveState, Google, Oracle and RedHat.

Updated PHP 5.4 and Apache 2.4 BitNami Stacks

We are happy to announce that we have updated our BitNami PHP platforms Stacks (LAMP, MAMP, WAMP, LAPP, MAPP and WAPP) to include the recently released PHP 5.4 and Apache 2.4.1. You can download the stacks as native installers for Linux, OS X or Windows, and as virtual machines. You will also find ready to deploy Amazon Machine Images (AMIs).

Among the new features in Apache 2.4, you will find major improvements related to performance and memory consumption, as well as Dynamic Reverse Proxy configuration, improved Authentication/Authorization, FastCGI Proxy and a Small Object Caching API. This release puts Apache on par with alternative web servers like nginx for many common scenarios.

Some of the key new features of PHP 5.4 include: traits, a shortened array syntax, a built-in webserver for testing purposes, significant improvements in performance and memory footprint.

In addition to PHP and Apache, the following major components were updated:

phpMyAdmin 3.4.10.1
AWS SDK for PHP 1.5.1
Symfony 2.0.11

Because PHP 5.4 is still very new and not all apps support them, these PHP platform stacks do not support BitNami application modules at this point in time. The stacks are intended for quickly testing and experimenting with these new versions, so please do not run them in production unless you know exactly what you are getting into!
