Elasticsearch added to Bitnami Library!

We are happy to announce that Elasticsearch is now available on the Bitnami library!

Elasticsearch is an open source real-time search and analytics engine. It is intended for use in distributed environments where reliability and scalability are critical. Almost any action can be performed using a simple RESTful API using JSON over HTTP.

Railo, now part of the Bitnami Library!

Thanks to Railo fans who voted during the Bitnami Application Contest, the fast, free, easy-to-use open-source CFML app is now available on the Bitnami Library!

How was the Railo project started? What are the origins of this project?

The Railo project started back in 2002 as a student project, and was continuously developed over the years until it's first launch in late 2005.

In the beginning it was just a project that had to compile CFML into something else. The first version we had, compiled from CFML to PHP. Yes PHP. In those days it was obvious that every server out there would have a PHP processor installed on it, so the choice was logical. However, the reasoning against it was the fact that PHP 5 was in its early beta, and therefore very unstable, inconsistent, and the performance penalty we would experience was too high. From there, we switched to Java and it proved to be the right choice.

Due to the fact that Railo, albeit in its early stage, was so much faster than other engines we decided to take it to a full product. As for its name, the correct pronunciation of Railo, as well as the scene of the origin of the name "Railo" can be found here. 

What is the main goal for Railo?

Railo aims to be the fastest CFML processing engine available, while remaining completely free and open-source for anyone to use and develop.

Which projects or organizations are using Railo currently? What kind of projects do they use it for?

Railo is used for all kinds of projects all over the world for sites and companies of various sizes. Probably one of the most popular users of Railo is NASA - who used Railo for their Mars Curiosity website - as well as many of their other projects. You can view more Railo success stories here. 

What do you expect will be the main benefits of having Bitnami packages available for Railo?

It is our hope that the Bitnami Railo stack will make it simple to deploy Railo within the Bitnami cloud service, as well as other providers around the Internet.

We are stoked to announce that Ametys, one of the winners from our monthly app contest, is now part of Bitnami Library!

JRuby 1.7.5 released!

We are happy to announce a new version of JRuby stack: 1.7.5. For those of you who may not be familiar with the project, JRuby is a 100% Java implementation of the Ruby programming language. It is Ruby for the JVM. JRuby provides a complete set of core “builtin” classes and syntax for the Ruby language, as well as most of the Ruby Standard Libraries.

The goal of JRuby 1.7 point releases is to fill out any missing compatibility issues with Ruby 1.9.3. This version fixed a number of issues related to compatibility and performance. You can find the list of the bugs fixed and new features here.

BitNami JRuby stack is a free self-contained package that simplifies the development and deployment of JRuby applications. This version includes ready-to-run versions of Java 1.7.0_40, Apache Tomcat 7.0.42, MySQL 5.5.32, JRuby 1.7.5 and all required dependencies.

Artifactory: Binary repository manager now part of BitNami

We are happy to announce that Artifactory is now available as part of the the BitNami library. Artifactory is a binary repository manager for Maven, Ivy and Gradle modules among others. This solution is already used by a large number of popular open source projects and is now available in BitNami as native installers for  Windows, OS X and Linux, virtual machines and Azure and Amazon EC2 cloud images.

Baruch Sadogursky, Developer Advocate at JFrog, the company behind Artifactory, tells us more about this project.

What is the goal of the Artifactory application?

Artifactory is a Binary Repository. It is intended to solve all the binary storage-related needs in an organization, being it organizational Maven/Gradle proxies, in-house YUM repositories, NuGet galleries, Ruby Gems hosting, or an operations department repository with VM images.

What are some of the features of Artifactory?

The most prominent features of Artifactory are the smart checksum once-and-only-once content storage, exceptional integration with all the most popular build tools and CI servers, the schema-less binaries metadata and the automation features, like REST-API and user plugins.

Which projects or organizations are using Artifactory currently?  What kind of projects do they use it for?

We have several hundred thousands of open source users and thousands of paying customers. More and more are joining every day. Security fix for Java, BitNami apps updated

A new Java version that includes patches for multiple security vulnerabilities has been recently released. We want to let BitNami users know that all our Java-based application installers, virtual machines and cloud images have already been updated:
New versions of Apache Tomcat, JBoss, JRuby, Jenkins, Liferay, Alfresco and JasperReports has been released with the latest Java SE 7 update 25.

For more details about these security issues please check the information provided in the official Oracle Java blog. It is recommended that you upgrade to the latest versions of the apps.

We will also be removing older versions of the apps from Amazon, Azure and other repositories, to prevent end users inadvertently launching insecure versions of these apps.

AWS SDK for Node.js now in BitNami Cloud Tools for AWS

Amazon recently released a new AWS SDK for Node.js which provides JavaScript objects for AWS services like Amazon S3, Amazon EC2 and DynamoDB. We are glad to announce that this SDK has already been included in the BitNami Cloud Tools for AWS installers available for Windows, Linux and Mac.

You can now find this new SDK and the Node.js runtime itself  together with other useful development kits like the AWS SDK for Java and the AWS SDK for Ruby in BitNami Cloud tools. These tools allow you to manage AWS services from the command line or programmatically using your preferred development language.

In this version we also include major updates of other core components, which include features such as:

- AWS Elastic Beanstalk 2.4.0 adds EC2 Role support for log publication and support for displaying Events, Tail Logs and EB Push.

- Amazon RDS Command Line Toolkit 1.14.001 adds support for read replica status.

-  AWS SDK for Ruby 1.11.0 adds support for web identity federation to AWS Security Token Service. Since 1.8.0 (previous version included in BitNami cloud tools) it also adds  support for parallel scan in Amazon DynamoDB, Elastic Load Balancing support in AWS OpsWorks and support for the AWS Support API.

- AWS SDK for Java 1.4.5 adds support for web identity federation in AWS Security Token Service (STS). Since 1.3.27 (previous version included in BitNami cloud tools) a lot of new features have also been included. Now it also supports Parallel Scan in Amazon DynamoDB, Elastic Load Balancing in AWS OpsWorks, the AWS Support API, automatic endpoint management in SQS,  Amazon EC2 default virtual private clouds, Amazon Redshift, Amazon Elastic Transcode, Amazon RDS DB Instance renaming and IAM role in Amazon Elastic MapReduce.
