New Node.js version 4.0.0 available on Bitnami!

The Node.js foundation has released version 4.0.0 (stable) that fixes important issues, improves its functionality and upgrades some of its included dependencies.

It is a big upgrade from the last stable version (0.12.7) that released on July. You may be wondering why jump from 0.x to 4.x, that is because of io.js last version is 3.x and to avoid collision with Node.js it was decided to merge on 4.
  • Node.js and io.js are united.
  • NPM: Upgrade to version 2.14.2 from 2.13.3, that includes a security update.
  • v8: Upgrade to version 4.5.103.30 from 4.4.63.30.
  • Node-gyp: This release bundles an updated version of node-gyp that works with all versions of Node.js and io.js including nightly and release candidate builds. From io.js v3 and Node.js v4 onward, it will only download a headers tarball when building addons rather than the entire source.

You can find more information about this release on Node.js webpage.

We have released Bitnami Node.js version 4.0.0 on installersvirtual machines and cloud images.

Have questions about Bitnami Node.js or anything related? Post to our community forum, and we will be happy to help you.

Review an app, get a shirt

We want your opinions! What is it like working with your favorite CRM, wiki, bug tracker, or development stack? What advice would you give your friends?

There are an overwhelming number of choices people have for open source software. People can spend a lot of time evaluating a lot of software and still not find something that's quite right. That's why, starting today, we're asking our visitors to comment about their favorite open source apps and developer stacks on our newly released ratings and reviews feature. And, as a special incentive, we're offering free t-shirts for the first 30 people to submit reviews.

With thousands of daily deployments from Bitnami, the Bitnami community has become one of the most knowledgeable groups using open source software in development and production environments. We hope to capture some of that collective knowledge on our website.

To comment, you will need to sign in with your Bitnami account. Once you're in, share your personal experience of any of the 90 or so apps we offer by telling others how you used it, how well it worked – or didn't work – for you or your team.

How to get a free tshirt

Just write a quality review – you know, the kind of review you like to read. What matters most is sharing your experience with the software – pro or con. That's it! Login, write a review and we'll send a shirt. We'll email the first 30 people to write reviews to offer you a choice of shirts – our Bitnami logo shirt or the Cloud Geek shirt. Visit any stack page to add your $.02 and join the conversation.

You have decided! OpenERP to be added to the BitNami library.

It seems that our users are interested in accounting applications. First PhpCompta won our bi-weekly packaging contest a few weeks ago, now OpenERP has been chosen by our users to be added to the BitNami library.

You ask, we execute. As all other winner applications OpenERP will get free native installers, virtual machines and Amazon Cloud Images. But that is not all, since now also Windows Azure Cloud images will be available for each project that win our contest.

OpenERP is a comprehensive suite of business applications including Sales, CRM, Project management, Warehouse management, Manufacturing, Financial management and Human Resources just to name a few.

OpenERP's modular approach allows you to start with one application and add other modules later.

We continue working on previous winner applications like Chryp, Tiki and ResourceSpace. We are in contact with their developers and they will be released soon in BitNami.

Would you like your favorite app to be part of BitNami? Be sure to suggest and vote for it in our contest!  Once you have voted, remember to share via the Twitter, Facebook and Google Plus buttons to encourage your friends to do the same to help your app climb to the top of the list.

New BitNami JRuby 1.6.6 all-in-one installer and VMs released

We are happy to announce a new version of BitNami JRubyStack which includes the latest version of JRuby 1.6.6 and, for the first time, it is also available for 64 bit machines. BitNami JRubyStack is a ready to run environment of JRuby, MySQL, Tomcat and a few other components. It is available as native installers for Windows, Mac OS X and Linux, Virtual Machines and Amazon Machine Images.

Thanks to JRuby and the Warbler gem you can easily make a .war file from your rails projects that can be deployed with Tomcat. The rest of this post shows you how easy it is to do so. It assumes you have installed BitNami JRubyStack previously:

Here are the steps:

1 . Open a rubyconsole and move to your Rails application directory:

    cd jrubystack

2. Use the Warbler gem to generate a config/warble.rb file:

    jruby -S warble config

3 . Generate the .war file and copy it to the Tomcat's webapps directory.

     On Unix systems:
    jruby -S warble war
    cp jrubystack.war ../../apache-tomcat/webapps

      On Windows:
    jruby -S warble war
    copy jrubystack.war c:\Program Files\BitNami JRubyStack\apache-tomcat\webapps

Once Tomcat is started you can point your browser to http://localhost:8080/jrubystack

It's that easy!

BitNami Stacks in Korean and Hebrew!

We are happy to announce that we added support for two new languages thanks to contributions from our community: Korean and Hebrew. We have started adding these languages for the most popular Stacks: WordPress, Drupal, Joomla! and Redmine.

Korean BitNami Drupal welcome page

Hebrew Joomla!

We continue looking to translate BitNami Stacks to more languages. If you would like to help, please check our wiki entry on translations and start translating at translate.bitnami.org. Thanks to Yaron Shahrabani and Shin for the translations!

Get BitNami in your preferred language!

We recently started the process of getting BitNami translated into different languages. The BitNami Redmine Stack is available in Japanese and we already offers BitNami WordPress, Drupal, Joomla! and Redmine in Spanish. Our cloud offering, BitNami Clould Hosting, has also been translated into Spanish recently.

You can help us getting these and other stacks translated into different languages. For this reason we have set up a server running our BitNami Pootle Stack so that BitNami users can help us to make the Stacks available in more languages.

Please check our wiki to see how you can collaborate and start translating in translate.bitnami.org.

Thanks!

Create awesome surveys with LimeSurvey

At BitNami we do our best to make it easy for you to discover, install and use the best open source applications. We already package wikis, content management systems, blog software, customer relationship managers and more.

We are happy to announce a new addition to our family, LimeSurvey. This project allows users to quickly create intuitive, powerful question-and-answer surveys that can work for tens to thousands of participants without much effort. The survey software itself is self-guiding for the respondents who are participating.
Creating a Survey

Survey Example

BitNami makes setting up LimeSurvey a simple process, so you can be publishing surveys in no time. As with all BitNami applications, LimeSurvey is available as a native installer, virtual machine image or Amazon cloud template (AMI). In the case of the native installers, you can download the complete software stack or a module installer that will automatically install it on top of an existing BitNami Stack that you already have installed on your system. LimeSurvey will also soon be available in BitNami Cloud Hosting, allowing it to be deployed to the Amazon cloud in one click and automatically backed up and monitored. Combined with the AWS free usage tier, you can have a completely free hosted setup of LimeSurvey.

If you need help in customizing or extending LimeSurvey, there are a number of partners that can help you.

New Features in BitNami Cloud Hosting

We are excited to share some new features we have rolled out in BitNami Cloud Hosting! If you log in to your BitNami Cloud Hosting account (or sign up for a new one), you will see the following improvements:

  • OpenID: You can now setup and sign in to your BitNami Cloud Hosting account using OpenID. This means that you can log in with your Facebook, Google, Yahoo or GitHub account. One less password to remember!

Log into BitNami Cloud Hosting with OpenID.
  • Password Reset: Forgot your password? Well, that's embarrassing! But don't worry - we have implemented new functionality that will allow you to reset your password if you have forgotten it. Just click on the 'forgot password' link on the login screen and follow the steps to recover your password.

  • Free Tier Eligibility: We frequently receive questions regarding what is covered by the Amazon free tier of service. BitNami Cloud Hosting now provides visual feedback as to whether or not the server you are launching may qualify for the Amazon free tier. Please note that we will still provide cost estimates that do not take the Amazon free tier into account, as we are not currently able to pull this information from your Amazon account.

BitNami Cloud Hosting now indicates if your server may be
eligible for the Amazon free tier of service.

  • Random Passwords: If you do not specify a password when you launch a new server, one will be created randomly so that you are never using a default password. To view the generated password, click on the 'manage' button after selecting the appropriate server and then click 'show' next to the password entry, as shown below.

A random password will be auto-generated if you
do not specify one during the server setup process.

  • Email Notifications:  You will now receive a notification email every time that you launch a new server that includes details such as the server specifications and estimated cost, as shown below. At the beginning of each week, you will also receive an email summary that lists the servers that you are currently running.

New email notifications let you know when your server is ready.
We hope you enjoy these new features in BitNami Cloud Hosting. We have several others in the works, so stay tuned! If there are specific features that you would like to see in BitNami Cloud Hosting, let us know by opening a ticket in through our helpdesk
