Bitnami applications available in the OpenStack Community App Catalog

Today the Open Stack Foundation announced a new resource for sharing applications and developer tools during a keynote at the OpenStack Summit. The Community App Catalog — now available in beta — is open for contributions and will be curated by the community.

Five Bitnami stacks are featured the inaugural community catalog, including MEAN, Jenkins, Ruby Stack, LAMP Stack, Wordpress. This gives cloud users and developers point-and-click access to the applications, as well as a way to collaborate and access new technologies in the OpenStack ecosystem.

Bitnami is pleased to be a part of the effort to make installing cloud stacks and apps easier, alongside products from ActiveState, Google, Oracle and RedHat.

Have you explored the community catalog? We’d love to hear what you think. Share your opinion in the comments below. Or read the announcement from the OpenStack Foundation to learn more.

New to Bitnami: Backendless Enterprise

Backendless Enterprise – the newest addition to the Bitnami Library – is offering a free trial of their Enterprise Edition for up to 5 users. With a trial, you can experience all of the features that Backendless has to offer.

This mobile Backend as a Service (BaaS) platform is great for anyone who wants to build mobile applications with speed and ease. The platform can be used to create a variety of applications, ranging from line-of-business apps to social media, interactive, and entertainment apps, without server coding. It does this by utilizing programmable services that supply standard server functions.

Backendless is known for its ability to help developers produce applications in the nick of time with features such as:
  • Cross-platform data interchange – strongly-typed objects can cross boundaries of client-side environments without any additional processing or special code. For instance, an instance of class Order may be saved by an Android app and will arrive as an instance of the corresponding class Order to an iOS app.
  • Client-side debugging of custom business logic – developers can debug custom business logic locally on their machines before deploying it to the cloud.
  • Client-side code generation – Backendless generates client-side code for Android, iOS, JavaScript and ActionScript applications. The generated code provides access to the persistent storage via object-oriented data model. Also it includes complete app modules for user registration and logic, chat messaging, video streaming and geo location services.
  • Unlimited API call and unlimited request/second throughput – we do not limit our users and customers on the number of API calls their apps can make.
  • Multi-tier Security – Application data and API operations can be restricted with multi-tiered security policies which can protect data at different levels ranging from object-level ACL to application-wide restrictions.

Security release: WordPress 4.2.2

The WordPress project has just released a new version that fixes two security issues. The issues are explained below:
  • The Genericons icon font package contained an HTML file vulnerable to a cross-site scripting attack
  • WordPress versions 4.2 and earlier are affected by a critical cross-site scripting vulnerability, which could enable anonymous users to compromise a site
We have released Bitnami WordPress 4.2.2 (and Multisite version) installers, virtual machines and Amazon EC2, Google and Azure cloud images that fix these issues.

If you already have a running version of Bitnami WordPress, the application will be automatically updated. You can confirm that the update has been done by checking the version from your admin panel.

To learn more about these security issues, you can read about them further on the WordPress blog. Have questions about Bitnami WordPress? Post to our community forum, and we would be happy to help you.

Live Helper Chat is now ready to install in a few clicks with the Bitnami Live Helper Chat installers (available for Linux, Windows and Mac OS X), Virtual Machines (VMs) and Amazon EC2, Google and Microsoft Azure cloud images.

We had the pleasure of interviewing Remigijus Kiminas, Live Helper Chat's developer. Learn more about the Live Helper Chat project in the interview below:

What is the main goal of the Live Helper Chat application?

Live Helper Chat aims to be one of the best Open Source-Live Support solutions available. It's goal is very simple - give sites and e-commerce owners a fully flexible live support solution, without depending on any third party services, except hosting itself.

What are some Live Helper Chat application features?

Features like XMPP notifications, Co-Browsing, Pro-Active invitations are just the tip of the iceberg; There are many cool things you can do with Live Helper Chat. For advanced usage, it also supports NodeJS, PostgreSQL, Redis, and upcoming versions will have also full XMPP support (ejabberd).

Which projects or companies are using Live Helper Chat? What kind of projects do they use it for?

From what I know, there are sites with over a half million page-views per month using it without any issue. I also know that there are some companies that have over 20 operators using LHC at the same time. LHC itself is very flexible, so it can be extended to meet companies business logic (e.g it integrates tightly with the internal software stack companies are using).

In your opinion, what is the main benefits of having Live Helper Chat in the Bitnami Library?

The main benefit is the simplicity of having LHC running in the cloud in a few minutes. The interesting fact is that I was encouraged to submit Live Helper Chat to Bitnami from the community users themselves- they just wanted to have it running without any hassle.

Sharelock joins the Bitnami Library

Sharelock is now a part of the Bitnami library!

Sharelock is an open source Node.js based project that provides you with a simple and secure way to share secrets. Enter your secret and a list of emails or twitter handles for people that can access your secret. Sharelock encrypts all this and presents you a URL (a sharelock). The URL incorporates your encrypted secret, and it’s the only place it exists. Send the sharelock using any public or private channel, and if recipients can authenticate themselves, they can see the secret. You can also host your own version of Sharelock.

Sharelock is now ready to install in a few clicks with the Bitnami Sharelock installers (available for Linux, Windows and Mac OS X), Virtual Machine images (VMs) and Amazon EC2, Google and Windows Azure cloud images.

Once you have Sharelock running, you must create an Auth0 account. Follow this quick guide and configure the options below in the "/opt/bitnami/apps/sharelock/htdocs/.env" file:

AUTH0_DOMAIN = mydomain

We also had the opportunity to interview Tomasz Janczuk, Maintainer of the project, who was kind enough to answer some of our questions:

What is the goal of the Sharelock application?

At Auth0 (and in our personal lives) we’re constantly exchanging bits of confidential information. Because we take security so seriously, we didn’t feel comfortable sharing that information through normal channels like email or chat so we created Sharelock as an OSS project that provides a simple and secure way to share those secrets. Our hope is that people take advantage of Sharelock as the default way to share information like passwords, credit card numbers and more.

What are some of the features of Sharelock?

Anyone can use Sharelock via the web (at or download apps for Mac and Android. You can type any secret up to 500 characters and share with people using a whole domain (to share with multiple people), an email, or even a twitter handle. And, Sharelock is an OSS project so you can modify the source code to use your own signature or encryption keys as desired.

Which projects or organizations are using Sharelock?  What kind of projects do they use it for?

Sharelock usage has been heavily driven by individuals in over 100 different countries who, like us, were looking for an easy and secure way to share their secrets. Since Sharelock is an OSS project, we’re excited to see what other places it will show up in the future.

What do you expect will be the main benefits of having Bitnami packages available for Sharelock?

Bitnami packages will make it even easier to set up Sharelock instances with custom cryptographic keys. Whether people are looking for a more secure way to pass bits of information back and forth within their own apps, or just looking to test, Bitnami will make it super easy for users to get going.

Would you like your favorite app to be part of Bitnami? Be sure to suggest and vote for it in our monthly contest!
